Acids temporarily demineralize and “soften” the outer layer of enamel. Brushing your teeth immediately after exposure can lead to increased enamel abrasion.
After consuming acidic food or drinks, experiencing vomiting, or feeling acid reflux in your mouth, we recommend rinsing your mouth with water and waiting 30 to 45 minutes before brushing your teeth.
This allows saliva to neutralize the acid and remineralize the enamel surface.
Regular use of fluoride-based products, such as gels or mouth rinses, enhances enamel mineralization and reduces the effects of acids.
However, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when using these products. Fluoride can be toxic if ingested in excessive amounts.
