Tooth decay is a gradual, localized destruction of the hard structure of the teeth (enamel and dentin) caused by bacterial acids. If left untreated, it leads to the formation of a cavity in the tooth.
When we eat, bacteria in our saliva accumulate on the teeth, forming dental plaque. These bacteria then break down carbohydrates (sugars) from food, producing lactic acid, which gradually erodes the tooth structure.
To prevent cavities, it is essential to limit the frequent consumption of sugary foods and beverages and to remove dental plaque after each meal through thorough brushing. Additionally, using dental floss or another interdental cleaning method once a day is crucial for optimal oral hygiene.
